Our Purgeable Instrument Access Doors are manufactured to meet or exceed NEMA 12, 4 or 4X Ratings and equivalent IP Ratings, for indoor or outdoor applications and potential exposure to rain, washdown and corrosive atmospheres or chemicals.
Our NEMA 12 Rated PIADs feature mounting frames with squared corners. This is an efficient design that’s easily manufactured, but not suitable for outdoor applications or exposure to rain or washdown.
Our NEMA 4/4X Rated PIADs feature mounting frames with 45 degree corners, to maximize our replaceable door gasket sealing capabilities. This advanced design achieves a total seal that has been thoroughly tested to resist direct washdown and deluge rain conditions.
Please see Recommendations for Material Selection & NEMA Ratings below for more information, or contact a Best Purging Systems Corporation Sales Associate for assistance.
Best Purging Systems Corporation lets you select the location of your hinge, with the only limitation being the ratio between the length of hinged and unhinged sides.
The location of the door hinge is determined by additional information we request at time of quotation or order. However, it’s also related to the selection of your PIAD size range. Essentially, the first letter of the PIAD size range in our model number matrix specifies the minimum to maximum span of the PIAD’s hinged side, and the second letter specifies the minimum to maximum span of the PIAD’s adjacent sides. Therefore you must be certain of where you wish to hinge a PIAD, and ensure you corrolate that to selecting a PIAD Size Range.
In addition, to prevent door sagging and undue stress on the door hinges, we limit the ratio of unhinged to hinged sides to a maximum of 3:1 under most circumstances. Next, elevation and obstructions to door hinging will determine the best hinge position. Finally, if a top or bottom hinge location is selected, or if prevailing winds are a concern, it may be essential to consider the addition of Door Positioning Hardware, as explained in more detail below.
Take time to select your hinge position carefully, and then take care to select the proper size range.
And remember, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us for assistance and advice!
Best Purging Systems Corporation PIADs are provided with three window material options, each with unique characteristics to best meet your application.
G – LAMINATED SAFETY GLASS
This material features two panes of glass bonded by a sheet of polyvinyl butyral, making it shatter-proof. It’s absolutely transparent, extremely resistant to most corrosive chemicals and highly scratch resistance.
L – LEXAN™ MARGARD™ MR-10 – Lexan and Margard are Trademarks of the Sabic Corporation
This material is an exceptional alternative that’s impervious to all but the harshest of chemicals. The exclusive Sabic Margard™ MR-10 coating is highly scratch resistant, but not as impervious as safety glass. Select this material if impact potentials are high, but exposure risks to abrasion or harsh chemicals are low.
W – WIRE REINFORCED SAFETY GLASS
This material may be required by an authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). It’s intended for areas where impact or fire risks are high. However, it will impede the visibility of components, so we only recommended this option when it is required with no exceptions permitted by an AHJ.
We also offer a custom window material designator in our Model Number Matrix, so you can customize this feature as desired!
Simply use the Letter “U” and specify the material you require in writing at time of quotation or order.
We offer our PIADS with optional internal clearances to accommodate a wide range of panel mounted device depth!
As you may know, device covers or windows produced by larger enclosure manufacturers are offered in very limited sizes and no special depth ranges.
We therefore offer 2″, 3″ or 4″ depths to accommodate devices that cannot be protected with conventional covers or doors.
Please be sure to determine the minimum internal clearance or depth you require and contact a Best Purging Systems Corporation Sales Associate for assistance.
Standard materials and finishes are offered to complement your enclosure finish. However, custom materials and finishes are offered for an exact match if preferred!

Best Purging Systems Corporation can customize your purgeable instrument access door by adding mechanisms that position your door securely in an open position!
Whether you prefer gas cylinders or more economical and passive devices, such as articulating stays or telescoping supports, we offer options to securely maintain doors in open, raised or lowered positions.
These devices are ideal when doors must be hinged upward, or if they are located in areas with excessive winds to prevent them from being blown closed or over-extending their hinges. Best of all, to meet corrosion resistant requirements, all positioning hardware is available in stainless steel materials.
Due to the vast number of potential preferences and solutions available, door positioning hardware is not included within the PIAD Model Number Matrix. To receive this optional feature, make a standard product selection and then contact a Best Purging Systems Sales Associate to express your special needs.

Best Purging Systems Corporation provides hand, tool or key latch operators to facilitate uncontrolled or controlled access. * As noted below, the use of a tool or key is mandated by NFPA 496 for Type X purging and pressurization applications, but Authorities Having Jurisdiction may permit a variance.
* If utilized on Type X pressurized enclosures, hand latches require an electrical interlock that is rated for the area and required to remove or deenergize power to all non-rated equipment to comply with the 2017 edition of NFPA 496, Section 5.5.2.
** When utilized on Type X pressurized enclosures, key or tool latches comply with the 2017 edition of NFPA 496, Section 5.5.2, eliminating the need for electrical interlock switches.

We recommend the following materials in combination with NEMA Ratings to meet various applications…
Purgeable Instrument Access Doors from Best Purging Systems Corporation are manufactured to meet or exceed NEMA 12, 4 or 4X and corresponding IP Ratings, as noted below. These ratings satisfy increasingly harsh indoor or outdoor applications, along with exposures to rain, wash-down and corrosive chemicals.
14 Gauge Carbon Steel: NEMA 12 / IP 52
For indoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment; to provide a degree of protection against the ingress of dust, dirt, and dripping non-corrosive liquids, oil and lubricants, and to resist damage caused by exposure to atmospheres containing low concentrations of mildly corrosive gases, dusts or vapors.
14 Gauge 304 or 316 Grade Stainless: NEMA 12 / IP 52 *
For indoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment; to provide a degree of protection against the ingress of dust, dirt, and dripping corrosive liquids, oil and lubricants, and to resist damage caused by exposure to atmospheres containing high concentrations of severely corrosive gases, dusts or vapors.
